Do Partial Hospitalization Programs Work?

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

If you have already attended an inpatient treatment program for substance misuse or for mental health issues or if your struggles are less severe, then a partial hospitalization program is often the next step. A partial hospitalization program is an intensive outpatient treatment in which you live at home while you are engaged in treatment for usually three to five days a week, a few hours each day. It is more structured and more intense than a traditional outpatient treatment program in which one may be attending a non residential treatment facility just one or two days a week. It is, however, less intense than inpatient treatment or an inpatient program in which one receives constant supervision and support seven days a week.

With qualified treatment experts and group support, people in partial hospitalization programs (also known as PHPs) receive counseling in a structured setting. A PHP is tailored to each patient’s specific needs and addresses both mental health disorders and substance abuse.

Throughout a typical day in a PHP program, one may receive individual and group therapy sessions with a mental health professional. These sessions may include cognitive behavioral therapy as well as more modern therapies, all while in a non-hospital setting. This outpatient program addresses recovery and mental health for clients who are suffering and are looking for support to heal. With a PHP, clients can benefit from a support network from a group of individuals who are also engaged in the same PHP program.

Many partial hospitalization programs also involve the family in one’s overall treatment plan so that support, services, and the ability to stay on track are always at the forefront of the long-term plan. Further, these often-complex relationships among family members can be addressed and improved throughout treatment.

Is a Partial Hospitalization Program an Effective Treatment?

Yes, the evidence-based treatment modalities for a partial hospitalization program can be very effective. It is often helpful that those entering a partial hospitalization program can remain living in their homes, still maintaining their responsibilities and feeling of their normal life. This adds to the effectiveness of the program as one is not being uprooted, entering a sterile environment, and facing so much of the unknown. Necessary treatment options are available on a daily basis while individuals participate in partial- or full-=day treatment programs.

An initial assessment will determine whether detox, medication management, substance abuse services, or mental health services need to be a part of the plan. Whatever one’s specific needs may be, the goal of the partial hospitalization program is to meet those needs and set up the individual for a lifetime of recovery and health. From addressing mental health disorders to addiction, the expert professionals at treatment centers that offer a partial hospitalization program PHP will determine (after an assessment) the right path for you.

How Long Do Partial Hospitalization Programs Last?

The specific length of a PHP will vary for clients based on each person’s individual needs. For some who have a more severe addiction, they may benefit from treatment five days a week for several hours each day. This treatment for patients could last for a few months. On the other hand, PHP services may run only two days a week for two or three hours a day for an individual in recovery or for one who is addressing various disorders. This short-term treatment may run for eight weeks, depending on the individual.

An assessment is done by a mental health professional before the partial hospitalization program begins to determine a treatment plan and goals of each individual. Whether there is an issue with substance abuse or mental health concerns such as anxiety or depression, one’s symptoms will be addressed and a long-term plan will be determined. Once people feel ready for this next step of treatment, then continued therapy and healing can begin.
